UK Practical Driving Test Booking Changes (2026): What Every Learner Needs To Know

Big changes are happening to the UK practical driving test booking system in 2026, and if you’re learning to drive, these updates could seriously affect how you book, manage and plan your test.

The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) is introducing new rules designed to reduce bots, resellers and unfair booking practices—helping genuine learners get fairer access to tests while improving transparency across the booking system. (GOV.UK)

Why Are These Changes Happening?

For years, many learners have struggled with:

- Long waiting lists

- Test slot reselling

- Automated bots bulk-booking appointments

- Third-party services charging extra for cancellations

The DVSA’s aim is to create a fairer system, reduce exploitation and give learners greater direct control over their own bookings. These changes are particularly focused on protecting genuine learners from booking abuse and improving access. (GOV.UK)

Key 2026 Changes To The Driving Test Booking Process

1) From 31 March 2026: You Can Only Change Your Car Driving Test Booking TWICE

Previously, learners could change a car practical test booking up to 6 times. Under the new DVSA rules, this is now reduced to just 2 changes. (GOV.UK)

What counts as a change?

- Changing your date or time

- Changing your test centre

- Swapping appointments with another learner

Important:

After 2 changes, you’ll need to cancel your booking and rebook from scratch.

2) From 12 May 2026: Learners Must Manage Their Own Bookings

From this date, Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) and third parties can no longer independently book, change or swap practical car driving tests for pupils unless the learner is present and completing the process themselves. (GOV.UK)

What this means:

Your instructor can still:

- Help you prepare

- Advise you on readiness

- Provide their ADI number

- Support you through the process

But:

You, as the learner, must be directly responsible for your booking.

This is designed to reduce misuse from booking resellers and improve fairness.

3) From 9 June 2026: Test Centre Changes Become More Restricted

Learners will only be able to move their booking to one of the 3 nearest test centres to their originally booked location. (ADINJC)

Why?

This change is intended to:

- Prevent nationwide test-hunting abuse

- Reduce reseller manipulation

- Keep bookings more realistic and local

- Help DVSA better understand genuine regional demand

What Should Learners Do Now?

Before booking:

- Speak to your instructor first

- Make sure you’re genuinely test-ready

- Choose a realistic date

- Avoid panic-booking just because a slot appears

Avoid:

- Wasting your limited booking changes

- Relying on unofficial third-party booking services

- Booking too early without consistent readiness

What This Means For Driversity Learners

At Driversity, this reinforces something we already strongly believe:

Book when you’re ready — not just when a date appears.

With fewer changes allowed and tighter controls, rushing for an early slot before you’re genuinely prepared could create more stress, more cost and more setbacks.

Our advice:

Focus on safe, confident readiness first… then book strategically.

Final Thoughts

These 2026 changes may feel stricter, but they’re designed to protect genuine learners and improve fairness across the booking system.

In short:

More control for learners

Less influence from bots and resellers

Fewer unnecessary booking changes

Greater importance on proper preparation

Passing your driving test has always been about being ready — in 2026, your booking strategy matters more than ever too.
