DVSA Driving Test Booking Changes 2026: What Learner Drivers Need to Know
If you’ve been trying to book a practical driving test recently, you’ll know how challenging it can be to find an available slot.
The DVSA has now introduced several changes to the driving test booking system during 2026, with the aim of making the process fairer, reducing abuse of the booking system and helping genuine learners access driving tests more easily. (GOV.UK)
Here’s a simple breakdown of what’s changed and what it means for you.
1. You Can Only Change Your Driving Test Twice
One of the biggest changes introduced on 31 March 2026 is a reduction in the number of times a driving test booking can be changed.
Previously, a test could be changed up to six times. Under the new rules, learners can now make only two changes to a booking. This includes:
Changing the date or time
Changing the test centre
Swapping appointments with another learner
Once those two changes have been used, the booking must be cancelled and a new test booked. (LinkedIn)
What this means for learners
Book your test when you are realistically approaching test standard.
Using a driving test as a placeholder months before you’re ready is now much riskier than it used to be.
2. Learners Must Book Their Own Driving Test
Since 12 May 2026, only the learner taking the test can legally book and manage a practical car driving test. Driving instructors, driving schools and third-party booking services can no longer do this on a learner’s behalf. (despatch.blog.gov.uk)
Learners must:
Use the official GOV.UK booking service
Confirm they are the person taking the test
Agree to the updated terms and conditions
Parents, instructors and family members can still help, but the booking itself must be completed by the learner. (despatch.blog.gov.uk)
What this means for learners
Be wary of unofficial booking services or anyone promising to secure a test for you.
Always use the official GOV.UK system.
3. Test Centre Changes Are Now Restricted
From 9 June 2026, learners who wish to change their test centre can only move their booking to one of the three nearest test centres. (GOV.UK)
This change has been introduced to reduce speculative bookings, where people book tests far away simply to obtain an earlier date and then continually swap to a local centre later. (GOV.UK)
What this means for learners
Try to book the test centre you genuinely intend to use from the beginning.
Changing locations later may be much more limited than before.
Why Are These Changes Being Introduced?
The DVSA has stated that these changes are designed to tackle:
Test slot hoarding
Automated booking bots
Unofficial resale of test appointments
Long waiting times for genuine learners
Recent government action against booking bots has already started to improve the availability of driving test appointments in some areas. (The Sun)
My Advice as a Driving Instructor
The changes are likely to frustrate some learners initially, but overall I believe they are a positive step.
My advice would be:
✅ Book your test when you’re approaching test standard
✅ Speak to your instructor before making changes
✅ Use your two permitted changes carefully
✅ Book the test centre you genuinely want to use
✅ Avoid unofficial booking services
Remember, passing your driving test isn’t about getting the earliest date possible. It’s about being genuinely ready when that date arrives.
A well-prepared learner has a far better chance of passing first time than someone rushing to secure a test they aren’t ready for.
